13hThe Athletic’s Zak Keefer says we should “look for more emphasis on explosion” from the Chiefs’ passing game this season.

As Keefer notes in the article, Andy Reid “made a point of it all spring” for the Chiefs to “get back to pushing the ball deep down the field.” Per PFF, since 2021, Patrick Mahomes has ranked 21st or lower in ADOT (min. 300 dropbacks), but finished sixth in ADOT in 2018 when he broke out for 5,097-50-12 on his way to winning his first MVP. A lot has changed since Mahomes last aired it out at a high rate. Most notably is the departure of Tyreek Hill in 2022 and Travis Kelce no longer being the spry, explosive playmaker we saw several seasons ago. The Chiefs hope the return of Hollywood Brown and a second year of work for Xavier Worthy will lead to more explosive plays next season, which could spell big things for fantasy managers who decide to take shots on pieces of an offense that ranked 15th in scoring last season.

4dAndy Reid said he expects Travis Kelce’s snap counts will be “similar” to what they were in 2024, but he will “monitor Kelce’s playing time as training camp and the season progress and change the plan if necessary.”

In the 2024 regular season, Kelce was on the field for the third-highest snap count (939) and ran the fourth-most routes (575) of his career, so this is good news for fantasy purposes. Reid acknowledged Kelce is “getting older” and that he is willing to “be the bad guy in some cases” by pulling Kelce off the field when he needs to. While Kelce is a long shot to finish as the overall TE1, he seemingly remains a safe bet to produce a top-12 positional finish.

4dChiefs OT Josh Simmons (knee) is expected to be a full participant when training camp begins on July 21.

The Chiefs’ 2025 first-round pick participated in offseason practices and minicamp, which are noncontact events. The offensive line is currently three-deep at offensive tackle, with free agent-signee OT Jaylon Moore penciled in at left tackle and incumbent OT Jawaan Taylor in place at right tackle. Simmons has a chance to supplant Taylor at some point this season and will hopefully become a fixture in front of Patrick Mahomes at some point. Simmons suffered a torn patellar tendon in the middle of his final college season.

Rashee Rice

4dChiefs head coach Andy Reid said that wide receiver Rashee Rice (knee) will be a full participant at Chiefs training camp.

That is welcomed news for the Chiefs. Last year, Rice caught 24 passes for 288 yards and two scores in three games before going down with a knee injury in Week 4. Rice has been a full participant at voluntary OTAs and mandatory minicamp and appears on track to be fully healthy for the start of the 2025 season. As a rookie in 2023, Rice ranked second on the team in both receptions (79) and receiving yards (938) and played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ most recent Super Bowl title. Chiefs training camp is slated to begin on July 21.

Travis Kelce

5dChiefs TE Travis Kelce said “it really wasn’t that hard of a decision” to return to playing for 2025.

The long-time Chiefs tight end will turn 36-years-old this upcoming season and has had rumors floating around about retirement. However, he indicated that choosing to play over retirement was not a difficult choice. Kelce said, “I know I’m getting older, but at the same time I still feel like I’ve got a lot I can prove in this league.” He is on the final year of his contract, which he addressed as well by saying “I got one year on this contract, I know that, and we’ll try and figure out something for next year...right now I’m focused on winning a championship this year.” Kelce is open to returning for more years beyond 2025. A championship run may be a driving factor behind that, as the Kansas City organization is perennially in the mix, thanks in large part to Kelce and his chemistry with Patrick Mahomes.

6dThe Athletic’s Michael Silver believes Chiefs RT Jawaan Taylor could be a backup in 2025.

With the Chiefs drafting Josh Simmons in the first round in April, Silver believes Simmons has a chance to take a starting job away from Taylor this offseason. Our last two blurbs on Taylor are “Taylor could be a backup” and “Taylor’s odds of being on the 2026 roster are not high,” which is never the trend you want to see when you have a $27.3 million cap hit in 2026. It appears the Chiefs are ready to wash their hands of Taylor’s contract sooner rather than later.

19dThe Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell reports Rashee Rice (knee) was a full participant in Wednesday’s practice.

For what it’s worth, McDowell also noted that Rice had a good day. Patrick Mahomes told reporters last week that Rice had “no limitations” after suffering a season-ending injury in 2024. Rice, however, was held out of practice with an illness but is back in action as of Wednesday. All signs point to Rice being a full-go heading into Week 1 if his legal situation remains in limbo. Rice caught 24 passes for 288 yards and two scores in three games before going down with the knee injury last year. Even with an ADP quickly making its way into the third round in early drafts, Rice looks like a clear breakout target this summer.

Travis Kelce

24dPatrick Mahomes said he thinks Travis Kelce “feels better than even last year before going into last season.”

Kelce, 35, mulled retirement this offseason after turning in the worst year since his 2013 rookie campaign. Kelce posted a career-low three touchdowns last season and averaged a meager 8.5 YPR on 97 receptions. While the raw receiving totals remained intact, there’s no doubt that Kelce’s explosiveness has fallen off in recent years. He’s now had back-to-back seasons with a career-low YPR, and despite his quarterback praising him for being “motivated to go out there and have an even better year than he had this last (season),” it’s fair to wonder how much Kelce has left in the tank as far as being a high-end producer is concerned. While the future Hall of Famer will likely continue to produce more than the average tight end — as he did last season, his days of being a yearly 1,000-yard producer are likely behind him.

25dPatrick Mahomes told reporters that Rashee Rice (knee) looks like himself and has “no limitations.”

According to The Kansas City Star’s Sam McDowell, Rice was unable to participate in today’s voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) “because of an illness, not due to his injury,” adding that Rice is “progressing well.” This week’s OTAs are the first since the team hosted a one-off event on April 21. The next session is scheduled for next week, from June 2-5. Assuming Rice’s ailment is behind him come Monday, the event should help us confirm whether Rice really is the new Mr. Unlimited. On April 1, Reid told reporters that Rice was “on track to be ready” for training camp.

25dChiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Isiah Pacheco “looks tremendous right now.”

Pacheco did not look tremendous when he returned to the lineup in Week 13, after suffering a broken leg in Week 2. He finished the season operating in a split backfield with Kareem Hunt, whom the team re-signed to a one-year, $1.5 million contract this offseason. Reid’s compliment is positive, but fantasy managers should view Pacheco as having a wide range of outcomes at this time. Of course, that range of outcomes does include a high-volume role in the Kansas City offense, which should not be discounted.
